FFF 2010: Exploring and Blanking

Introduction

Not much to report for my First Fishing Folly 2010, as I stayed very much fishless as well as the various folks who fished with me on New Year's Day. Anyway, here are a few pics and a few words with it.

In the two weeks before the event, a good deal of river exploring always showed the same pattern, when water gets still (inflows or current break), it freezes! When it doesn't freeze, it flows quite a lot! When it doesn't flow much, it completely freezes! Oh, and when you get a tooth extracted, it's not a good idea to explore in the cold the day after, it hurts!

I finally selected two locations far from home, including one where I never fished before and which seemed perfect. I dutifully prebaited one of those swims every morning for a week (quite a detour to work). Trouble is this swim was wide open at the beginning of the week, and only a small sliver of water remained by New Year's Eve. Still, trying to stay hopeful, I prebaited both swims one last time and came back home for a good dinner with the family, hoping that the little snow man I found would not catch all the carp before me.

On the F-day, at midnight, I wanted to catch a quick carp with Domm and Eric, so we went to known spots close to Boston, where we usually catch within minutes in any weather. Ahem, trouble is it was completely iced out and we had to go try elsewhere. So here we were, at the only area of the Charles river with open water and... not much of a fish. Only reason to have fun, watch Eric deal with a big tangle of mono - I love my braided line, it never tangles! Even if it freezes in the winter! I always thought Eric looked like a pretty smart guy, but I will let you judge based on this pic...

After a few hours of sleep, I threw some bait in my nearly iced out swim, and went to meet with Greg, Jeff, Shane and Nick. Love my new ATT alarms, by the way, great to go set up a rod in an unlikely spot and come back for some social time with the other guys.

I really thought this very scenic location would deliver. Sadly, no carp in sight. Greg has a nice group pic showing what we collectively caught... nothing at all!

After a few hours of nothingness, the guys were ready to go home. As to me, I was thinking to go back to a not so exciting venue where I caught a fish during the FFF 2007, then changed my mind and decided to try for a miracle, this first swim I had dutifully prebaited. Not much room for my rods in there! The remains of the snow man proved very handy though as my bank sticks were clearly not compatible with the very frozen ground. I might have been quite in troubles if I had a run, but nah, miracles were not scheduled for my FFF day this year, nothing moved. Oh well, there is always next year!
